Liberia concludes Plans for the Celebration of the World Food Safety Day

The Technical Working Group (TWG) on Codex and Food Safety of Liberia held its fourth meeting for this year on the 27th of April 2023. The meeting was hosted by Fouani Brothers, a private sector member.

Amongst the key issues deliberated on was the conclusion of plans for the celebration of the World Food Safety Day. According to the presentation made by  the planning committee to the  TWG meeting, the celebration will focus on creating awareness. The proposed program has three key components which entail a public sensitization on food safety and theme of the World Food Safety Day through jingoes and talk shows on media outlets; food  safety outreach campaigns in three markets and a National Awareness activity amongst national stakeholders mostly policy makers, regulators development partners and apex bodies of private sector organizations. 

According to the plans, Liberia intends to use this platform of the celebration to strengthen the commitment of stakeholders in putting food safety as a high national development priority. It is also expected that  sensitization on the implementation of national food safety standards will be carried out amongst regulators and value chain actors. The celebration will be a week long event.

Upon the completion of presentation of the plans, the TWG meeting endorsed the submission of the  committee.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministries of Agriculture, Commerce and Industry, National Public Health Institute, Liberia Maritime Authority, National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority, National Standards Laboratory and Liberia Marketing Association. Others presented were the  National Food Fortification, National Consumer Protection Association, World Health Organization and three private sector industries.

The TWG on Codex and Food Safety, is the technical body of the National Codex Committee of Liberia with the major  responsibilities of  deliberating and recommending key issues on Codex and food safety to the NCC  for consideration and approval…
