Strengthening national Food Control System in Liberia to ensure safety of foods and improve trade (TCP/LIR/3702)
Background:
A two-year Technical Cooperation Program (TCP) intended to strengthen National Food Control System by ensuring safety of food and trade improvement in Liberia was officially signed on the 10th of September 2019 between the Government of Liberia, represented by Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The TCP subsequently ended in December 2021. However, two residual activities of the TCP were considered for further support. They are namely the drafting and technical validation of proposed food regulations meant for implementing of the National Food law and awareness of Codex.
With regards to the development of regulations for implementing the National Food law, a national legal consultant was hired by FAQ, who developed drafts and held stakeholders’ engagement that led to pre and final technical validations on the 21st and 25th of August 2022 respectively. These instruments are:
- Draft Executive Order Operationalizing the Food Law by Extending the Transitional Period
- Draft Board Resolution of NPHIL Initializing the Food Control Center
- Draft Abattoir and Meat Inspection
- Draft National Food Fortification Regulation
- Draft Vegetables Regulation
- Draft Edible Oils and Fats Regulations
- Draft Laboratory Designation Regulation
